How to Build a Yoga Practice That Actually Works for You
A Beginner's Guide from Soma Yoga & Wellness
Welcome to Soma.
We're so happy you're here.
We created this guide to help you feel more confident and supported as you begin (or return to) your yoga practice. We know life is full. Between work, family, responsibilities, and schedules that often feel like a game of Tetris, it can be hard to imagine adding one more thing to your calendar.
Our hope is that this guide helps you discover a realistic, sustainable approach to yoga—one that supports your wellbeing and fits into your life as it is right now.
We're honored to be part of your journey.
Let’s get started.
If you've ever thought:
• I'd love to do yoga, but I don't have time.
• I don't know which class to take.
• I'm not flexible enough.
• I don't know where to begin.
•I want to try yoga but I’m nervous about group classes.
You're not alone.
These are some of the most common concerns we hear from new students.
The good news? You don't need to be flexible. You don't need to practice every day. And you don't need the perfect schedule. You simply need a practice that works with your life.
The Biggest Misconception About Yoga
Many people start yoga thinking they need to go all in. They tell themselves:
"I need to practice every single day."
"I'm going to completely transform my routine."
"I'm going to yoga at least five days a week."
Then life happens. Work gets busy. Kids get sick. Plans change. And suddenly yoga becomes one more thing on the to-do list. Instead of aiming for perfection, aim for consistency. A practice you can maintain is far more valuable than
a practice you can't.
How Often Should I Practice?
The answer is almost always ‘it depends’:
Once per week is a wonderful place to begin. You'll build familiarity with the practice and start creating space for yourself each week.
Twice per week is where many students begin noticing meaningful changes in stress levels, energy, mobility, sleep, and overall wellbeing.
For many people, three times a week becomes a sustainable rhythm that supports long-term growth and consistency.
But remember: more isn’t always better. The best practice is one you can realistically maintain.

So, What Do I Need to
Bring to Class?
Just yourself.
And if you have a yoga mat, feel free to bring it. Otherwise, we have you can use for free.
We also provide all props to support your practice.
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and bring water if you'd like.
Most importantly: Come exactly as you are.
What If I Can't Attend Every Week?
That's okay.
Yoga isn't about perfection. It's about returning. It’s about staying consistent over time, even if that means you have to skip a week. Yoga is about longevity — in our lives and in our practice.
Every time you step onto your mat, you're being offered the opportunity to begin again. Refreshing, eh?
What If I'm Not Flexible?
This is the other big misconception about yoga.
Yoga isn't something you do because you're flexible. Yoga is something you practice to improve mobility, strength, awareness, and flexibility.
You don’t go to the gym because you’re already super strong. You go to build strength.
Yoga is the same.
