Abhyanga: Daily Self-Massage for Balance and Wellness

Abhyanga – Self-Massage for Nourishment and Calm

Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of self-massage with warm oil. It’s a simple ritual that nourishes the skin, calms the nervous system, and promotes a sense of inner stability—perfect for the holiday season or any busy time.

How to Practice Abhyanga:

  1. Choose Your Oil – Sesame oil is grounding and nourishing; coconut oil is cooling.

  2. Warm the Oil – Slightly warm the oil in your hands before applying.

  3. Massage Technique

    • Feet and legs: circular motions up toward the heart

    • Arms: circular strokes toward the shoulders

    • Abdomen: clockwise circles

    • Head and scalp: gentle circular motions

  4. Leave Oil on for a Few Minutes – Let the oil absorb or perform your morning ritual while it sinks in.

  5. Shower or Wipe Off Excess – Finish with a warm shower or a damp cloth.
